Did you know?
Spray heads apply about one inch of water in a forty five minute time period. Gear driven rotors will apply about one inch of water in about 2.50 hrs. Drip irrigation will apply about one inch of water in about 1.15 hrs.
Listed below are general guidelines for the amount of water to be applied to your landscape area throughout the year. In the spring apply one inch of water every 10 to 15 days. In the summer apply one inch of water every 5 to 7 days. In the fall apply one inch of water every 10 to 15 days and in the winter apply one inch of water every 15 to 20 days. Example if you wanted to distribute 1" of water in a week and you had spray heads, you could water Mon, Wed, and Fri fifteen minutes per zone. This would be about 1" of water applied to your landscape throughout the week. If you had a rotor zone it would run 50 minutes a zone three times a week this would be about 1" of water applied to your landscape throughout the week. You can check your system distribution rate with a measuring cup. Set the cup out from the spray zone and run it for fifteen minutes and times that amount times three and that is your distribution rate in 45 minutes which should be close to 1" inch of water. If it is a rotor zone run it for 15 minutes and times that amount times 10 and that is your distribution rate in 2.50 hrs which should be close to 1" of water depending on head spacing. Note that rainfall counts toward the one-inch needed for the time period. If you have clay soils you should water more frequent and less duration to prevent runoff and give more water to your lawn rather than the street.
